Epic Games setup for parents

Providing Parental Consent for Under-13s

Children under 13 need parental approval to use certain features in the Epic Games Store.

To set up permissions for your child:

1. Step 1 – If your child already has an account, they will be prompted to enter your email address so you can provide consent.

If your child is new to the platform, start by creating your own account and entering their date of birth. Their account will be created later.

Look out for an email from Epic Games and click CONTINUE to proceed.

2. Step 2 – Review the Epic Games Terms of Service, then click AGREE and follow the on-screen steps.

3. Step 3 – Decide if your child can access games from other platforms. For best safety, it’s recommended to select No.

4. Step 4 – Choose who your child can communicate with. "Friends Only" or "Nobody" are the safest options for children under 13.

5. Step 5 – Select the game content you’re happy for your child to access. For example, Fortnite is rated PEGI 12.

Your child will only be able to play content at or below the age rating you choose.

6. Step 6 – Confirm your age using one of the available verification methods, such as a face scan, debit/credit card, or ID.

Then complete the setup of your child’s account if needed.

Setting Up a PIN

You’ll need to create a PIN to enable parental controls in the Epic Games Store.

To create your PIN:

1. Step 1 – Either log in to your child’s existing account or create a new one. Click the profile icon in the top right corner.

2. Step 2 – Select Account from the drop-down menu.

3. Step 3 – Click on PARENTAL CONTROLS. Create a memorable 6-digit PIN. You’ll need this PIN to make any changes to the controls.

Managing Purchases and Spending

You can control or block purchases made through the Epic Games Store using parental control settings.

To set spending limits:

1. Step 1 – From the main screen, click the profile icon and then choose Account.

2. Step 2 – Go to PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your 6-digit PIN.

3. Step 3 – Under EPIC GAMES PAYMENT, use the toggle to require your PIN for any purchases. When the toggle is blue, PIN protection is enabled.

Note: This setting only controls spending within the Epic Games Store. To restrict purchases on other platforms, see their specific control guides.

Setting Age-Appropriate Content Limits

You can restrict which games your child can access based on age ratings.

To set content filters:

1. Step 1 – Click the profile icon and then select Account.

2. Step 2 – Go to PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your PIN.

3. Step 3 – Scroll to the EPIC GAMES STORE section. Under RATING SYSTEM, choose from ESRB, PEGI, or GRAC. The PEGI system is commonly used in the UK.

4. Use the slider to choose the maximum age rating your child can access. They’ll only be able to see and play content within or below that rating.

Controlling Communications

You can manage who your child can speak to, receive friend requests from, or chat with via voice or text.

To control communication settings:

1. Step 1 – Click the profile icon in the top right and go to Account.

2. Step 2 – Click PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your 6-digit PIN.

3. Step 3 – Scroll to GENERAL SOCIAL PERMISSIONS.

To manage friend requests:

1. Under EPIC FRIENDS PERMISSION, toggle the switch to blue. Your child will need your PIN to add or accept friend requests.

To control voice chat:

1. Scroll to EPIC GAMES VOICE CHAT PERMISSION. Select from "Everybody," "Friends & Teammates," "Friends Only," or "Nobody."

2. For younger children, "Friends Only" or "Nobody" is usually best.

To manage text chat:

1. Scroll down to EPIC GAMES TEXT CHAT PERMISSIONS. Choose between "Everybody," "Friends & Teammates," "Friends Only," or "Nobody."

2. Again, "Friends Only" or "Nobody" is recommended for younger players.

Filtering Inappropriate Language

You can filter out mature language within the Epic Games Store by enabling the built-in language filter.

To turn on the language filter:

1. Step 1 – Click the profile icon and go to Account.

2. Step 2 – Click PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your PIN.

3. Step 3 – Scroll down to ADDITIONAL PERMISSIONS. Under MATURE LANGUAGE, toggle the setting to blue to enable filtering. All mature words will be replaced with hearts.
