What is an online stranger?

Playing games and making friends online can be lots of fun! You can meet people who enjoy the same games, watch funny videos and explore exciting new worlds together.

But sometimes, someone you meet online might not be who they say they are.

An online stranger is someone you don't know in real life. Even if they seem friendly, have a cool username or play your favourite game, you can't always be sure who is behind the screen.

That's why it's important to know how to spot tricky people and keep your private information safe.

How online strangers can contact you

An online stranger might:

  • Send you a friend request while you're playing a game
  • Message you even though you've never met them
  • Say nice things to make you want to be friend
  • Start asking questions about you or your life

How to spot the warning signs

If someone online does these things, stop and tell an adult

  • Asks which school you go to
  • Wants to know where you live
  • Tells you to keep your chats a secret
  • Asks you for pictures or information
  • Makes you feel worried or uncomfortable

How to stay safe with online strangers

    • Keep your school name, address and phone number private
    • Never share your passwords with people online
    • Ask a grown-up before accepting a new friend request
    • Don't send pictures to people you don't know
    • Ask a grown-up to help check your privacy settings
    • Stop replying if someone makes you feel uncomfortable
    • Always tell a trusted grown-up if something feels wrong

Remember: You can have fun online without sharing your secrets. It's always okay to ask for help!

What to do if an online stranger worries you

    • STOP – Stop talking to the person. You don't have to reply.
    • BLOCK – Block them so they can't keep messaging you.
    • REPORT – Tell the game or app what happened.
    • TELL – Talk to a trusted grown-up straight away.
    • You are not in trouble for asking for help.

Pico learnt that not everyone online is who they say they are. If something feels strange, tell someone you trust. You don't have to deal with it alone!

Not everyone online is who they say they are! If someone I don't know asks for my private information or tells me to keep secrets, I'll stop, block, report and tell a grown-up I trust. That's the Safe & Smart way!
