Ransomware

What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that locks your device or files and asks for money to unlock them. It can affect anyone, not just businesses. Some people never get their files back, even if they pay.

What to do if it happens

Ransomware can be serious, but if you back up your files and know what to look out for, you can avoid the worst of it.

Real stories, real impact.

NHS

In May 2017 a piece of malware called WannaCry spread across NHS hospitals in England, affecting around forty hospitals in more than twenty NHS trusts and over one hundred GP surgeries. Staff lost access to patient records, thousands of appointments and operations were cancelled, and ambulances had to be sent elsewhere. The work came to a halt in some places even though the infection was contained after a security researcher found a kill‑switch domain that blocked further spread. An official report estimated that the attack cost the NHS about £92 million in cancelled services and IT recovery.
