What is malware?

Malware is a type of bad software. It sneaks onto your phone, tablet or computer without you knowing. It can spy on what you do, steal your passwords, or break your device.

You might get malware by clicking on something in a message or game, or by downloading an app or file that is not safe.

Signs something might be wrong

Look out for these things. They might mean malware is on your device:

  • Your device becomes really slow or keeps turning off
  • It feels hot all the time
  • The battery runs out quickly
  • Strange apps or pop-ups appear
  • Your passwords stop working
  • You see messages that are not from you

If you see any of these things, tell an adult you trust straight away.

How to stay safe

  • Only download apps and games from trusted places like the app store. Be careful with links, even if they come from a friend.
  • Keep your device updated. Updates help keep the bad stuff out.
  • Use the device’s safety tools. These help check for bad files. Make sure they stay switched on.

Also remember:

  • Save copies of your important files and photos in case anything goes wrong
  • Delete old apps you do not use anymore

What to do if you already did something wrong

  • Tell a grown-up right away
  • Switch off the internet on the device
  • Use a trusted antivirus scanner to check the device
  • Delete anything strange you did not put on it
  • If needed, reset the device with help from an adult
  • Change your passwords using a safe computer or device

Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is telling the truth and asking for help early.

Malware can sneak in quietly. It is not your fault. But if you say something early, it can be fixed.
