Discord setup for parents

Accessing Content & Social Settings

These settings let you control who your child can message, friend, or interact with.

  1. Open the Discord app
  2. Tap the You icon in the bottom-right corner
  3. Open Settings
    1. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner of the You page
  4. Navigate to Content & Social
    1. Scroll down to find Content & Social in the settings menu
  5. From here, you can adjust messaging and friend options

Blocking Sensitive Media

Prevent your child from viewing or receiving inappropriate content in messages.

  1. Go to Content & Social
  2. Tap Direct Messages from friends
  3. Set sensitivity controls
  4. Choose to block friends from sending sensitive content, or choose to blur such content
  5. Adjust messages from non-friends
  6. Tap Direct Messages from others and set to Block to prevent messages from strangers

Filtering for Spam

Stop unwanted or spam messages from reaching your child’s inbox.

  1. Go to the Content & Social menu
  2. Scroll to Direct Message spam
  3. Choose your filter level
  4. Select Filter all messages or Filter from non-friends

Messages identified as spam will be redirected to a separate inbox.

Managing Server Settings

Control how your child interacts with others inside group servers.

  1. Access Server settings
  2. In Content & Social, scroll to Server settings
  3. Choose server scope
  4. Tap Server defaults to choose a specific server or select All servers to apply settings across the board
  5. Apply restriction
  6. Use toggles to disable DMs from server members or filter messages from people your child doesn't know

Managing Friend Requests

Control who can send your child friend requests.

  1. Open Friend Requests
  2. In the Content & Social menu, scroll to Friend requests
  3. Set request permissions
  4. Tick boxes to allow requests from Everyone, Friends of Friends, or Server Members
  5. Restrict all requests
  6. To prevent new requests, uncheck all boxes

Setting Up Discord Family Centre

Family Centre allows you to link your account with your teen’s to monitor activity.

  1. Go to your Discord profile
  2. Tap the You icon (bottom-right) → Tap the gear icon (top-right)
  3. Set up Family Centre
  4. Select Family Centre from the settings menu
  5. Tap Connect with Teen
  6. Link your profiles
  7. Scan the QR code from your child’s screen to send the link request
  8. Once accepted, Family Centre will be activated
  9. Monitor usage
  10. View how many users your child has messaged or called, how many new friends they’ve made, and how many servers they’ve joined
