YouTube setup for parents

Setting Up a Supervised Account

For children 13+ transitioning from YouTube Kids (under-13s should use YouTube Kids).

  1. Sign in to your parent account (same as Google Family Link if used) → Click your profile icon.
  2. Select Settings → Parental settings → Choose the child’s account
  3. Tick YouTube and YouTube Music → Next → Select
  4. Pick a content level:
    • Explore (9+)
    • Explore More (13+)
    • Most of YouTube (all except 18+ content) → Select
  5. Review controls → Finish Setup.

Updating Parent Controls

Adjust settings as your child grow

  1. Select the child’s profile to:
  2. Sign in to YouTube → Profile icon → Settings → Parental settings.
    • Change content levels (Explore/Explore More/Most of YouTube).
    • Reduce screen time: Disable autoplay, watch history, or search history

Monitoring Activity

  1. Sign in to the child’s account → Profile icon → Settings.
  2. Go to History & privacy → Manage all activity.
  3. View watch history (parents are notified if this is turned off).

Turning On Restriction Mode

In the YouTube App:

  1. Sign in → Profile icon → Settings → General.
  2. Toggle Restricted Mode (blue = on).

On YouTube.com:

  1. Sign in → Profile icon → Restricted Mode → Toggle on.

Deleting a YouTube Channel

If you or your child wants to delete their channel, you must use the web browser.

  1. Go to YouTube.com → Profile icon → YouTube Studio
  2. Settings → Channel → Advanced settings
  3. Scroll to Remove YouTube content → Delete my content → Confirm.
