X (Twitter) setup for parents

Accessing Privacy and Safety Settings

Begin by navigating to the privacy tools that allow you to manage the account’s safety.

1. Open the main menu

a. Tap the profile picture (top-left) → Select Settings and privacy

2. Open privacy settings

a. Tap Privacy and safety to begin customising options

Managing Audience and Tagging

Control who can view posts and tag the account in photos.

1. Go to Audience and tagging

a. In Privacy and safety, tap Audience and tagging

2. Adjust visibility and tagging

a. Toggle Protect your posts – only approved followers can view posts

b. Toggle Protect your videos – prevents downloads of posted/sent videos

c. Tap Photo tagging – Choose from Anyone, People you follow, or No one

Filtering Content

Limit exposure to graphic, adult, or sensitive media.

1. Access content filters

a. From Privacy and safety, tap Content you see

2. Customise settings

a. In Explore settings, toggle location-based content

b. In Search settings, enable filters to hide sensitive content and block content from muted/blocked accounts

3. Filter sensitive media

a. Tap Sensitive media → Choose filter levels for:

i. - Graphic violence

ii. - Adult content

iii. - Other sensitive media

4. Set preferences to Always hide, Show with warning, or Allow

Muting and Blocking Users

Block or mute unwanted users and filter specific words or phrases.

View blocked/muted users

1. Go to Privacy and safety → Tap Mute and block

2. Manage blocked/muted lists

a. Tap Blocked accounts or Muted accounts to view or edit

Add muted words

3. In Mute and block, tap Muted words

4. Tap the + icon → Enter the word, phrase, hashtag, or username

5. Set duration, source (e.g., timeline or notifications), and who it applies to → Tap Save

Managing Message Settings

Choose who can message the account and disable audio/video calling.

1. Open message controls

a. In Privacy and safety, tap Direct messages

2. Adjust message options

a. Toggle Message requests to No one for maximum privacy

b. Disable audio and video calling options

Discoverability and Contacts

Prevent people from finding the account via phone number or email address.

Manage discoverability

1. Go to Privacy and safety → Tap Discoverability and contacts

Disable contact links

1. Toggle all settings Off to prevent contact-based discovery

Reporting, Blocking, and Muting Users

Protect your child from abuse or harassment by using X’s report and block features.

To report a user:

1. Visit their profile → Tap the three dots (top-right) → Tap Report

2. Select the issue and follow the steps → Tap Submit

To block a user:

1. On the user’s profile → Tap the three dots → Tap Block

2. Confirm by tapping Block

To mute a user:

1. On the profile, tap the three dots → Select Mute → Confirm by tapping Yes, I’m sure
