TikTok setup for parents

Setting Up Family Pairing

Family Pairing allows parents to link their TikTok account to their teen’s for added supervision.

  1. Link accounts
    1. Go to your profile
    2. Tap the three lines (top-right)
    3. Tap Settings and privacy
  2. Begin setup
    1. Scroll down to Family Pairing
    2. Tap Continue
    3. Select Parent to generate a QR code or send a link
  3. Teen joins
    1. On your teen’s device, open Family Pairing and scan the QR code or click the link
    2. Tap Link accounts → Confirm to activate
  4. Manage settings
  5. From your account, tap your child’s name in Family Pairing to begin managing safety features

Managing Screen Time

Set daily time limits, schedule breaks, or block app access during specific hours.

With Family Pairing

  1. Open your child’s profile via Family Pairing
  2. Go to Screen Time
  3. Tap Daily screen time
  4. Tap Set screen time limit
  5. Choose the time per day (min 40 minutes)
  6. Tap again to confirm

Schedule Time Away

  1. In Screen Time, tap Schedule Time Away → Toggle to On
  2. Select hours to block access (e.g. during school or bedtime)

Without Family Pairing

  1. Go to Settings and privacy
  2. Tap Screen time
  3. Adjust Daily screen time, Screen time breaks, Sleep reminders, or Time Away
  4. Add Screen Time Breaks
    1. Tap Screen time breaks
    2. Tap Schedule break
    3. Choose preset or custom intervals

Setting Sleep Reminders

Sleep reminders prompt your teen to wind down and take breaks at night.

  1. Set up on teen's account
  2. Go to Settings and privacy
  3. Tap Screen time
  4. Tap Sleep reminders
  5. Choose times
  6. Tap Set up
  7. Select a Start time
  8. Tap Done
  9. For under-16s, the app automatically sets the End time to 8 hours later

Managing Notifications

Control when your teen receives push alerts or disable them entirely.

With Family Pairing

  1. Open your child’s profile
  2. Tap Push notification schedule
  3. Toggle On
  4. Select time ranges (e.g. school hours)

On the teen’s account:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy
  2. Tap Notifications
  3. Adjust notification types
  4. Tap toggles to disable individual alerts
  5. Tap In-app notifications to adjust alerts during app use

Customising Content

TikTok allows keyword filtering, educational content boosts, and content restrictions.

Using Family Pairing

  1. Go to your child’s profile
  2. Tap Content preferences
  3. Add Keyword filters, enable STEM feed, or toggle Restricted Mode

On the teen’s account

  1. Go to Settings and privacy
  2. Tap Content preferences
  3. Use options to refresh the For You feed, view muted accounts, and adjust personal filters

Making Accounts Private

By default, accounts for users aged 13–15 are private, but settings can be reviewed or locked via Family Pairing.

Through Family Pairing:

  1. Tap your child’s profile → Go to Privacy and safety
  2. Toggle Private account to On (blue)
  3. Toggle Suggest account to others to Off (grey)

On teen's device:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy
  2. Tap Privacy
  3. Toggle Private account On
  4. Adjust Discoverability options

Managing Contact Settings

Control who can comment, message, or interact with your child.

With Family Pairing:

  1. Tap Privacy and safety under your child’s profile
  2. Under Safety, change each setting to Friends or No one

On the teen's account:

  1. Go to Privacy settings
  2. Adjust:
    • Comments: Filter inappropriate or keyworded content
    • Mentions: Set to Everyone, Friends, or No one
    • Reuse of content: Restrict Duets, Stitches, and content sharing

Video Privacy Settings

Each video can have individual privacy settings regardless of account type.

Edit an existing video

  1. Go to the video on your profile
  2. Tap the three dots
  3. Scroll
  4. Tap Privacy settings

Choose who can view or comment

  1. While posting a video
  2. Tap the gear icon during upload
  3. Set audience and reuse permissions

Delete a video

  1. Tap the three dots on the video
  2. Scroll right
  3. Tap Delete

Reporting and Blocking Users

Users and videos can be reported or blocked for violating TikTok’s guidelines.

Report or block a video

  1. Tap the share arrow
  2. Tap Report
  3. Select a reason
  4. Tap Submit
  5. Alternatively, tap Not interested to train the algorithm

Report or block a user

  1. Visit the user’s profile
  2. Tap the share icon (top-right)
  3. Tap Report or Block

Deleting a TikTok Account

You can deactivate or permanently delete a TikTok account.

To delete the account:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy
  2. Tap Account
  3. Select Deactivate or delete account
  4. Choose Delete account permanently
  5. Follow prompts
