Snapchat setup for parents

Setting Up Snapchat Family Centre

Family Centre allows you to link your account to your child’s and view who they’re communicating with.

  1. On your device
    1. Download the Snapchat app and log into your own account
    2. Tap Add Friends
    3. Search and add your child’s username
    4. Return to your profile
    5. Send an invite Tap the gear icon (top-right)
    6. Tap Family Centre
    7. Tap your child’s name
    8. Tap Send invitation
  2. Accept the invite on your child’s device:
    1. Tap Add Friends
    2. Add your username
    3. Tap View Invitation
    4. Tap Accept

Once connected, you’ll see your child’s interactions under Family Centre.

Removing My AI Data

Snapchat’s AI chatbot,“My AI,” is pinned by default but data can still be deleted by all users.

Delete AI data

  1. Tap your profile
  2. Tap the gear icon
  3. On Android:
    1. Scroll to Account Actions
    2. Tap Clear My AI data
    3. Confirm
  4. On iOS:
    1. Scroll to Privacy Controls
    2. Tap Clear Data
    3. Clear My AI data
    4. Confirm

Note: Only Snapchat+ subscribers can unpin the My AI chatbot.

Deleting Dreams Data

Dreams uses selfies to create AI images. You can remove these at any time.

Remove AI selfies

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Under My Account, tap AI selfies
  3. Tap Clear my AI selfies (if data exists)

Limit use by others

  1. Change the setting to Only me under who can generate Dreams with your image

Managing Notifications

Help reduce screen time by customising or disabling notifications.

  1. Access notification settings
    1. Tap your profile image (top-left)
    2. Tap the gear icon (top-right)
    3. Tap Notifications
  2. Turn off alerts
    1. Untick the notifications you no longer wish to receive
    2. You can also adjust notification sounds, lights, and vibration

Customising Who Can Contact You

Limit incoming messages to friends only for added privacy.

  1. Change contact permissions
    1. Go to your profile
    2. Tap the gear icon(top-right)
    3. Scroll to Privacy Controls
    4. Tap Contact Me
  2. Set your preference
    1. Select Friends or Friends and Contacts

Adjusting Chat Settings

Manage how your child interacts with specific users.

  1. Open chat settings for a user
    1. In your chat list, tap the user’s profile
    2. Tap the three dots (top-right)
    3. Tap Chat Settings
  2. Enable or disable options
    1. Toggle the settings you wish to adjust (e.g., message notifications, time limits)

Controlling Story Visibility

Decide who can view your child’s Snapchat Story.

  1. Change Story settings
    1. Go to your profile
    2. Tap the gear icon
    3. Scroll to Privacy Controls
    4. Tap View My Story
  2. Select an audience
    1. Choose My Friends or Custom to block certain users

Note: Updates apply to future and existing Snaps in that Story.

Turning Off Location Sharing

Use Ghost Mode to hide your child’s real-time location.

  1. Open Snap Map settings
    1. Tap the location pin icon (bottom-left)
    2. Tap the gear icon (top-right)
  2. Enable privacy features
    1. Toggle Ghost Mode to On
    2. Optionally, toggle Hide my live location to stop real-time updates

You can also access this from the Snap Map on the profile screen under See My Location.

Blocking, Removing or Reporting a User

Block or report users who send inappropriate or unwanted messages.

Manage a friendship

  1. In the chat list, tap the user’s profile
    1. Tap the three dots (top-right)
    2. Tap Manage Friendship
  2. Choose your action
    1. Tap Report, Block, or Remove Friend
  3. Follow the prompts to confirm

Reporting Content

Flag inappropriate content from Stories or Spotlight.

Report a Story

  1. While viewing, tap the three dots (top-right) or long-press the Story → Tap Report
  2. Choose a reason and add details → Tap Submit

This process also applies to Spotlight videos.

Enabling Two-Factor Authentication

Add extra account security through 2FA.

  1. Open security settings
    1. Go to your profile
    2. Tap the gear icon
    3. Tap Two-Factor Authentication
  2. Set up 2FA
    1. Tap Continue and follow on-screen instructions
    2. Choose between using an authentication app or mobile number

News & Stories

View all news
