PlayStation 5 (PS5) setup for parents

How to Add a Family Member on PS5

You can apply custom parental controls for each individual user on your PS5. To do this, users must be added to your Family settings.

You’ll need your own PlayStation account to get started. Go to playstation.com/acct/family to manage Family settings.

To add a family member:

Step 1 – Log into your PlayStation account in a web browser and go to Family Management > Add Family Member.

Step 2 – Choose Add a Child. Read through the information provided about data and privacy.

Step 3 – Follow the prompts to apply parental settings, or click Confirm if you want to return to these settings later. Controls will automatically reflect your child’s age.

How to Manage Spending Limits in the PlayStation Store

You can apply a monthly spending cap for your child’s PlayStation Store purchases via Family Management.

Note: Limits for in-game purchases must be set within each game individually.

To apply spending limits in the PlayStation Store:

Step 1 – Visit playstation.com/acct/family and access Family Management. Select your child’s account.

Step 2 – Scroll down to Network Features. Next to Monthly Spending Limit, click Edit.

Step 3 – Choose the amount you want to allow per month. This will apply to all purchases made in the PlayStation Store. Click Save.

How to Restrict Communication and User-Generated Content

You can stop your child from using chat and messaging on the PlayStation Network (PSN). This restriction will also block them from sharing videos, images and text with others.

To set these restrictions:

Step 1 – In Family Management, select your child’s account. Scroll to Network Features and click Edit beside Communication and User-Generated Content.

Step 2 – Choose Restrict from the dropdown options. Save your settings.

Note: You can still allow communication in specific games under the Allowed Games section in Family Management.

How to Manage Screen Time on PS5

Playtime limits can be managed from your web browser for both PS5 and PS4.

To set playtime limits:

1. Step 1 – In Family Management, select your child’s account. Click Edit next to Playtime Settings.

2. Step 2 – Set Restrict Playtime to Restrict. You can also set up notifications and adjust playable hours.

Tick By Days of the Week if you want different rules for weekdays and weekends.

3. Step 3 – Set how many hours your child can play per day and what time they should stop. This is helpful for maintaining bedtime routines. Click Save.

Remember: These limits apply to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

How to Set Age Restrictions on PS5

You can apply age-based restrictions directly to your console that affect all new users.

To set these restrictions:

1. Step 1 – From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings (gear icon).

2. Step 2 – Select Family and Parental Controls.

3. Step 3 – Choose PS5 Console Restrictions. You’ll be prompted to set or enter a PIN.

4. Step 4 – Set User Creation and Guest Login to Don’t Allow. Then go to Parental Controls for New Users.

5. Step 5 – Under Age Level for Games and Apps, choose the PS5 option. Repeat the same steps for PS4 content.

6. Step 6 – Select your region so age ratings match local systems like PEGI in the UK. Then choose the age level allowed.

You can also restrict content from DVDs and Blu-rays in this section.

How to Block Players on the PlayStation Network (PSN)

If your child has issues with another player on PSN, blocking them will prevent all future interactions.

Blocking someone will stop them from:

• Seeing your profiles, personal info or activities

• Joining parties or sharing screens

• Sending messages

• Hearing or seeing each other in voice chats or Share Screen

To block someone on PSN:

1. Step 1 – Press the PS button to open the Control Centre, then go to Game Base.

2. Step 2 – From the Friends tab, choose a friend.

You can also block people from the Parties tab by selecting a party, then choosing a player from the members list.

3. Step 3 – Go to the user’s profile, click … (More), then select Block.
