What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of bad software that locks your device or hides your files so you cannot use them. Then it asks for money to unlock everything again.

It can happen to anyone, not just big companies. Schools, families, and even kids can get tricked if they are not careful.

How ransomware gets into your device

Ransomware usually sneaks in when someone:

  • Clicks a link in a strange message or email
  • Downloads something from a website that is not safe
  • Tries to install a game or app that is not real
  • Uses software that is old or has not been updated

What it looks like

If you ever see these things, stop and tell an adult

  • You cannot open your files anymore
  • You see strange names on your saved files like dot locked or dot encrypted
  • A message appears on the screen asking for money to get your stuff back
  • The message has a timer or scary warning
  • You cannot get into your device at all

How to stay safe from ransomware

    • Save your files in a safe place, like a USB stick or the cloud. Ask an adult to help.
    • Always keep your device updated. Updates help block the bad stuff.
    • Be careful with messages or links. Do not click on something if you are not sure who sent it.
    • Only open links and files from people you trust
    • Use antivirus tools to scan your device
    • Do not try to install games or apps from strange websites
    • Never use broken or copied games or software

Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is telling the truth and asking for help early.

What to do if your files get locked

    • Tell an adult straight away
    • Switch off the internet on the device
    • Use antivirus software to check what happened
    • If you have saved your files in a safe place, you might be able to get them back
    • Ask for help from a trusted adult or computer expert
    • Do not pay the money. There is no promise the files will come back

There are helpers online who might be able to unlock your files for free. Grown-ups can find them by visiting special websites.

If something pops up and feels scary or strange, stop and tell a grown-up you trust. Ransomware is sneaky, but with good habits and teamwork, we can stay one step ahead.
