Fortnite setup for parents

Setting Up Parental Controls

Fortnite Battle Royale is rated PEGI 12 due to violence. However, younger players may still access it. Epic Games provides in-game controls that work alongside Epic Games Store parental settings.

To enable parental controls:

1. Step 1 – On the main menu, click the 3-line menu icon in the top corner, then choose the gear icon.

2. Step 2 – Click PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your 6-digit PIN. If you've set up a PIN in the Epic Games Store, use the same one here.

You can now adjust Fortnite’s built-in parental controls.

Filtering Mature Language

Text chat filters help remove inappropriate language by replacing it with heart symbols.

To enable the mature language filter:

1. Step 1 – On the main menu, click the 3-line menu, then the gear icon. Select PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your 6-digit PIN.

2. Step 2 – Switch FILTER MATURE LANGUAGE to ON, then click SAVE.

Hiding Account Names

When a player is eliminated, their username appears on-screen. You can hide your child’s name from others and limit what names they see.

To hide your child’s username:

1. Step 1 – Open the 3-line menu, click the gear icon, and open PARENTAL CONTROLS.

2. Step 2 – Next to NON-SQUAD MEMBERS CAN SEE YOUR NAME, switch this OFF.

Note: Squad members (up to 3 teammates) will still see your child’s username.

To hide other players’ usernames:

3. Step 3 – Next to YOU CAN SEE NON-SQUAD MEMBERS NAMES, switch this OFF.

Click SAVE when finished.

Limiting New Friends

It’s important to manage who your child adds or accepts as a friend to protect them from strangers.

To control friend requests:

1. Step 1 – Open the 3-line menu, then click the gear icon to open settings.

2. Step 2 – Click PARENTAL CONTROLS and enter your 6-digit PIN.

3. Step 3 – Turn ON REQUIRE A PIN TO ADD EPIC FRIENDS. Your PIN will now be needed to accept or send friend requests.

4. Step 4 - Click SAVE to finish.

Managing Text and Voice Chat

Fortnite allows players to communicate through voice and text chat. You can set limits based on who your child can talk to.

Available options include:

• Everybody – Open chat with all players.

• Friends & Teammates – Chat only with friends and those in your squad.

• Friends Only – Chat limited to players your child has added.

• Nobody – All voice and text chat is disabled.

To set communication limits:

1. Step 1 – Open the 3-line menu, click the gear icon, then go to PARENTAL CONTROLS.

2. Step 2 – Under VOICE CHAT, choose who your child can talk to through headset. FRIENDS ONLY is usually best.

3. Step 3 – Under TEXT CHAT, select who they can message. FRIENDS ONLY is recommended. Older teens (16+) might use FRIENDS & TEAMMATES depending on maturity.

4. Step 4 - Click SAVE when done.

Setting Time Limits

You can manage how long your child plays Fortnite each day, in 15-minute intervals.

To set playtime limits:

1. Step 1 – Open the 3-line menu, click the gear icon, and open PARENTAL CONTROLS.

2. Step 2 – Scroll to TIME LIMITS and select it.

3. Step 3 – Choose between no time limits, the same limit every day, or a custom schedule with different limits for each day.

Receiving Screen Time Reports

You can receive weekly reports on your child’s playtime by email to help balance gaming and wellbeing.

To enable weekly playtime reports:

1. Step 1 – From the main menu, click the 3-line icon, then the gear icon. Go to PARENTAL CONTROLS.

2. Step 2 – Find WEEKLY PLAYTIME REPORTS and switch it ON.

Reports will be sent to the email linked to the account. If it’s not your own, visit the Epic Games Store guide to update it.

Limiting In-Game Spending

If your credit/debit card is saved on your child’s device, they may be able to make purchases in Fortnite.

To understand purchasing:

1. Step 1 – From the main menu, click ITEM SHOP. Then click V-BUCKS to view available bundles and prices. Select a bundle and click PURCHASE.

2. Step 2 – This opens the payment screen. Set up a PIN through Epic Games Store to ensure purchases need your approval.

Using Privacy Settings Without a PIN

Older teens may be ready to take more responsibility for their own safety. Fortnite allows users to manage privacy without using the parental PIN.

To access these settings:

1. Step 1 – Open the 3-line menu, then click the gear icon and choose SETTINGS.

2. Step 2 – Click the person icon in the top bar to access safety options.

From here, adjust SOCIAL PRIVACY and GAMEPLAY PRIVACY settings.

Reporting a User

If your child encounters inappropriate behaviour or rule-breaking, they can report it anonymously.

To report a player during a match:

1. Step 1 – Open the MENU and select REPORTING/FEEDBACK.

2. Step 2 – Choose REPORT PLAYER, select the reason and the player’s name.

3. Step 3 – Go to the submit tab, click ACCEPT and then SEND REPORT.

To report after a match:

1. Step 1 – Find the user’s profile. Click REPORT and choose the reason.

2. Step 2 – Go to the submit tab, click ACCEPT and then SEND REPORT.

Understanding Cabined Accounts

Players under 13 will have cabined accounts until a parent grants permission for full access.

What cabined accounts do:

• Children can still play Fortnite and other Epic games, but with restrictions. They can’t chat, make purchases, or receive notifications, but can use previously purchased content.

• To unlock features, parents must give consent.

See the Epic Games guide for how to do this.
